Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care Work in Jamaica

The Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care Project in Jamaica is a practical placement for anyone who wants to work with animals. Whether you are a pre-university student applying for a place studying Veterinary Medicine at university, an undergraduate, a qualified vet, or simply a passionate animal lover, you can get involved in our Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care project in Jamaica.

Veterinary work in Jamaica

Volunteers on the Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care project work in Montego Bay at an animal rescue shelter. Volunteers work mainly with domestic animals but will get the chance to visit places with other species of animals. Volunteers provide treatment and care to dogs, cats, birds and horses. There is also the opportunity to engage in activities such as community outreach and educational programmes.

The animal shelter was established in 2009 to help abandoned or starving animals and to raise awareness of the plight of animals in Jamaica, it is the only rescue centre in the north west of Jamaica. The centre makes sure that all animals in their care are medically fit, spayed or neutered and then re-homed to responsible, loving new owners.

Volunteering on an Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care Placement in Jamaica with Projects Abroad

Volunteers are able to help in three main areas:

  • General treatment and care of the animals
  • Rescuing stray animals
  • Community outreach and educational programmes

General treatment and care of the animals

All volunteers are needed to provide general care to the animals at the shelter and to stray animals. You will assist with feeding the dogs, cats and birds and cleaning the kennels or bird cages. Some of the animals may arrive at the shelter after being abandoned, neglected or abused, so you may see some shocking cases.

Volunteers who have any experience or training in veterinary medicine will find their skills put to full use, while volunteers without experience will provide basic treatments to the animals and observe more complex procedures. Volunteers may also accompany the manager of the project to a veterinary clinic each week when any animals need to be treated at a clinic rather than at the shelter itself.

Rescuing stray animals

Volunteers assist with rescuing animals found on the streets in nearby communities and throughout the city of Montego Bay. These may be abandoned or neglected animals that are in need of care and protection.

Community outreach and educational programmes

Animal education in schools

Part of the project includes community outreach work. This involves feeding stray animals on the streets and in local communities, and distributing food to caretakers of animals who cannot afford to take care of them financially. The outreach work also involves carrying out house visits to animals in need of care and re-visiting families that have adopted animals from the shelter.

Volunteers may also have the opportunity to visit a horse stable in a nearby community each week to provide basic treatment and care to the horses there. Volunteers will be selected to take part in these visits depending on their qualifications and any experience of working with horses.

The educational aspect of the project involves raising awareness in schools and communities to educate children and local people about the importance of caring properly for animals and providing information on how to report cases of abuse, neglect and cruelty. Teaching children from a young age about the value and responsibility of animal ownership is a vital part of improving the situation in the future.

You can join the Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care project in Jamaica for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period
