Romania: Coach Sports in Schools, Orphanages and Day Care Centres

Physical education lesson

You can volunteer as a sports coach in Romania as part of a gap year or during a career break - everybody is very welcome! You do not have to have previous experience; anyone with a general love of sport can participate.

Projects Abroad volunteers teach a mix of football, basketball, volleyball, and general physical education at a variety of placements in Brasov, to children and teenagers who would otherwise not easily get the chance to learn such activities. Sports lessons rarely appear on timetables in schools, and they may be removed from the national curriculum altogether in the future. This has the biggest impact on orphans or children coming from very poor families, as they can not afford to pay for extra-curricular sports classes.

Your time will therefore be spent teaching sports at various orphanages, centres for disabled children and day care centres for economically disadvantaged children. As a result you’ll play a valuable role in the community, making sporting activities accessible to all backgrounds.

Volunteering Abroad on Sports Projects in Romania

Volunteers teaching sports will split their working week between several institutions, for example spending two days at an orphanage, two days at a centre for disabled children, and one day a week at a care centre. This will enable all volunteers to gain a broad perspective of the education and care system in Brasov. It also means that a large number of children will benefit from the presence of having sports volunteers.

You can get involved in as many sports as you wish or focus solely on your favourite! Please let us know when you apply if you have any preferences and we’ll be able to tailor the placement to your interests.

Your Role as a Sports Volunteer in Romania

Volunteers will be able to take their own class or assist a local teacher, depending on the specific placement and age of the students. Volunteers will be responsible for preparing a schedule of activities and setting goals for the students to reach. Classes can be anything from organising fitness sessions for a small group of children, coaching advanced football skills to teenagers, to running a basketball competition and educating children on sporting principles.

Most children have a great enthusiasm and an unlimited appetite for sport - especially when it is made accessible and fun. Before long you will begin to see improvements in their general health and fitness, as well as their confidence.

You can join a Sports project in Romania for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
