Multi-sports Volunteer Projects in Peru

Sports in Peru

If you are looking to volunteer on a sports project and want to experience what it is like to work with children within a Peruvian community, then the Multi-sports project is perfect for you. Volunteers do not need to have any previous experience; anyone with a general love of sports can participate. You can volunteer as part of a gap year, during a career break or as an alternative holiday.

Projects Abroad volunteers teach football, basketball and volleyball at a variety of placements, some of which operate all year round. You will contribute by teaching sports to school students within the local community and help them increase their physical health and ultimately help them build confidence. You will play a valuable role in the community, making sporting activities accessible to children from all backgrounds.

Volunteering Abroad on a Multi-sports Projects in Peru

As a volunteer on the Multi-sports project in Peru, you will be placed at a partner sports academy and assist sports coaches with providing training to students. Depending on your placement, age of the children and your ability to lead a team, you will have the opportunity to run your own training sessions with the teams, under the supervision of the local coaches.

Volunteers will be responsible for preparing a schedule of activities and setting goals for the students to reach. Classes can be anything from organising fitness sessions for a small group of children, coaching advanced football skills to teenagers, to running a basketball competition and educating children on sporting principles.

As a volunteer on the Multi-sports project, you can choose to focus on one of the following sports: basketball, football or volleyball. You will, however, have a chance to get involved with other sporting activities, such as assisting physical education teachers, once you have completed the hours allocated to your chosen sport.

Your role as a Multi-sports volunteer

Football: You may work with children from age 7 to 15 years old, Monday to Thursday, from 3pm to 6pm. There are between 80 and 130 children that take part in this project each year. Children are generally divided into groups: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Some teams participate in highly competitive football leagues, so they will need all the motivation and help they can get. This project runs all year round, but attendance may decline at the end of the year, due to Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Basketball: The basketball academies welcome up to 80 dedicated students and are growing steadily. Volunteers will be placed at one of the academies, either Escuelas Deportivas Municipales or Apu Pitusiray, and will work Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 3pm to 6pm and on a Thursday from 5pm to 8pm. Saturdays are reserved for competitive matches against other basketball teams. Children train in a multipurpose hall or at a local government sports centre. This project runs all year round, but attendance may decline at the end of the year, due to Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Volleyball: Volunteers work with girls from the ages of 8 to 15 years old. You will be placed at a school and work with 15 to 20 girls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3pm to 6pm. Although this project is still growing, volunteers will be able to see the girls improve their skills from scratch. The project is not available from December until March and at the end of July.

You can join a Multi-sports project in Peru for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
