If you are thinking about a career in occupational therapy or have recently graduated and are looking to gain more experience, you may be interested in volunteering in South Africa with Projects Abroad.

Occupational Therapy volunteers are placed at a residential care home that has been caring for physically and mentally disabled patients since 1976. Most of the residents are unable to live with their families, as they require specialised care. However, the care centre also helps to foster children who have been neglected or abandoned by their families. The care home is a non-profit organisation and receives most of its funding from the government and fundraising events.

Volunteering abroad on an Occupational Therapy placement

Occupational Therapy in South Africa

As an Occupational Therapy volunteer in South Africa, you will work alongside a qualified occupational therapist for most of the day. When you are not working with the qualified staff, you will play with and care for the children in the wards. During this time, you have the option to take the children to the park or for a swim in the onsite pool. You will of course need to check with the local staff before taking any children off the site.

Due to the nature of the work, volunteers on this placement should be able to cope with challenges of working with severely disabled patients.

You are expected to work from 9am until 2pm, Monday to Friday; however you have the option to work longer hours at the care centre should you prefer.

You can join this project in South Africa for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely at the care home please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
