Ethiopia: Volunteer Medical Placements and Work-Experience

Medicine in Ethiopia Volunteering abroad on a Medicine & Healthcare placement with Projects Abroad is an excellent way to gain medical work experience combined with the chance to help people in some of the poorest medical institutions in the developing world.

Medicine volunteers in Ethiopia will have the opportunity to work in a variety of medical institutions in Addis Ababa. Your role is that of an intern and you will shadow the doctor who has been assigned as your supervisor. By observing the doctors and nurses, you will learn about different conditions and treatments and can discuss the cases with them to improve your medical knowledge. Your exact role within the hospital or clinic will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff.

All Medicine volunteers in Ethiopia must have completed at least one year of related university level studies or training by the time they join this project. We will request to see a copy of your CV once you have applied, so your placement can be tailored to your level of experience and interests.

You will have the opportunity to work in a variety of departments such as cardiology, neurology, psychiatry and physiotherapy. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in community work.

Facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect at home. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and will learn about conditions that are rare in developed countries.

Volunteer Physiotherapy in Ethiopia

A Physiotherapy placement There is a real shortage of skilled physiotherapists in Ethiopia. If you're currently training, a recently qualified physiotherapist, or on a career break, you'll provide valuable support and training to both healthcare workers, and the families of people affected by HIV.

You will find that the experience you can gain on this volunteer physiotherapy placement will really help you to get an idea of how a successful community based healthcare programme works, while also giving you hands on experience delivering physiotherapy treatment. Because a portion of your time will be spent passing on your skills to fellow care-givers, you'll go home safe in the knowledge that you've made a real and lasting contribution to this project and the people it serves.

As a physiotherapy volunteer you'll work alongside a catholic charity based in Addis Ababa that provides advice, healthcare and education to families living with HIV. The scheme is a highly progressive project that aims to increase people's knowledge and understanding of the disease, and provide practical physiotherapy care to terminally ill children.

During the mornings you'll usually travel around Addis carrying out home-based care alongside a small team of local staff. You'll visit families in their homes, treating common illnesses faced by patients such as TB or unexplained paralysis. You'll help to carry out and explain simple exercises to family members to enable them to keep them up until your next visit. Afternoons will frequently be spent working alongside the local physiotherapy staff, passing on your skills and knowledge.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to work at another charity treatment centre which provides treatment to over 120 patients. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of patient care as well as providing advice and training to the family members of the patient.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ethiopia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

This programme is one where you can gain real satisfaction at having made a difference, while simultaneously gaining worthwhile work experience, and all with the added bonus of getting to know a fascinating and strikingly different culture.
