Swahili Language Courses

Learn Swahili in Tanzania

Immerse yourself in the vibrant Tanzanian culture on one of our intensive Swahili Language placements. Swahili is a Bantu language spoken mainly by people of eastern and central Africa and is the national language in Tanzania. The Swahili language has been influenced by Arabic and more recently also by English. One of Swahili’s attributes is that its pronunciation is straightforward compared to some other languages.

You can learn Swahili through Projects Abroad on an intensive two week or month-long Language Project, where you will receive an average of 15 hours tuition each week. With accommodation in the home of a local family, you'll learn quickly and can practice what you've learnt with your hosts each day. Lessons are with a qualified language teacher and are tailored to your personal level and can be adapted to your interests.

After your lessons you will, of course, have plenty of time to complete your homework and explore Tanzania with other volunteers.

Alternatively you can undertake a shorter, 14-hour or 30-hour language course in Swahili which runs alongside your volunteer placement. If you are planning on volunteering abroad for three months or more, you could also complete a 60-hour course alongside your placement.
