Nursing Elective Placements in Nepal

If you are a nursing student, you can take your Nursing Elective at one our placements in Nepal. We have placements available in Kathmandu and Chitwan.

Nursing Elective Placements in Nepal

As a student on a Nursing Elective your role will be observational. You will learn about many new medical conditions as you will be exposed to many diseases you would not normally see at home and gain a greater understanding of healthcare in the developing world.

Our in country staff are highly experienced in coordinating Elective placements. They will work closely with you to try to ensure all of your university requirements are met.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to attend monthly lectures or workshops.

Whatever your nursing specialism, Projects Abroad will work with you and your university to ensure you are allocated a hospital or clinic where you can fulfil the requirements of your Elective module. Our in country staff are highly experienced in coordinating Elective placements. You will be allocated a supervisor, a qualified member of staff, who will work closely with you and ensure your experience with them is rewarding.

Options for Elective Students

We have a variety of placements you can choose from. These include hospitals and rehabilitation centres for disabled children.

Some of our placements are Nepal’s leading referral centres for the functional mobility of physically disabled children. Most of the cases here are neglected orthopaedic conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and spinal injuries. In hospitals you can work in departments such as general health services, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, dental services, ENT, x-ray, ultrasound and neurology. You could also work at one of our placements dedicated to providing the best available medical and healthcare in the field of trauma, orthopaedics and rehabilitation.

We also offer placements where you may come into contact with many diseases in acute stages of development, which you are extremely unlikely to have seen in the West. Many of these conditions, with symptoms such as diarrhoea and with their origins in malnutrition, are easily preventable. You can be involved in campaigns to increase public awareness around health issues and to help to improve the quality of life by educating people about health and sanitation.

Your Role in Nepal

You will find nurses in Nepal tend to only deal directly with treatments of patients, so you won’t be involved in basic care of patients as their families tend to take on this role. You will shadow nurses while they carry out their duties and help where you can.

While you are on your Nursing Elective, you may have the opportunity to spend time on one of the outreach programmes. Outreaches are organised by the hospitals we work with on a monthly and bi-monthly basis outside of the rainy reason (June to September) and offer free health checks and basic medication to suburban or remote communities.

Volunteers working in Chitwan may have the opportunity to visit local schools to lead health and hygiene classes.

To take your Nursing Elective in Nepal, you must be able to speak intermediate level English as a minimum.

While you are in Nepal with Projects Abroad, you will live with a local host family or in a hostel. Our volunteer community is also at hand for you to spend time with on your time off. There is a lot to do and see in Nepal and plenty of other volunteers to experience it with.
