Nursing Elective Placements in Ghana

As a volunteer joining a Nursing Elective with Projects Abroad in Ghana you will gain a wealth of valuable experience to take with you in your career. You will find the hospitals in Ghana an excellent base for learning and improving your Nursing skills.

Nursing Elective Placements in Ghana

You will come into contact with conditions that you wouldn't normally see in Europe and North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis. Nursing methods will also be different from what you are used to and here will be much for you to experience and learn.

If you wish to do your Nursing Elective in Ghana, you will have a choice of a large hospital in a city, or working in a more rural setting. You will shadow one of our supervisors who all speak English and are very experienced at working with nursing students. They will be keen to test out your nursing experience, as well as giving you the benefit of their training and knowledge.

Our Nursing Elective programmes in Ghana are based in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Koforidua and the Akuapem Hills. In Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi you will be based in bustling city hospitals, working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses. In the busy town of Koforidua and in the Akuapem Hills you will work in one of the local hospitals.

Supervision on your Elective Placement

When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad coordinator and the placement supervisor who will be a member of the hospital staff. If you are specialising in a specific area of nursing, then discuss this with us as we will ensure you are able to develop a programme of study to support this. Many students choose to spend time in a variety of different departments within the hospital, including accident and emergency, paediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physiotherapy and surgery.

In all regions, students on Nursing Electives can also take part in regular medical outreach work, which involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages or paying a visit to an orphanage for example. Those on a Nursing Elective wanting to specialise in the outreach work can join a full time Public Health project based in Kumasi. Anyone interested in working with HIV and Aids patients could join our HIV/Aids control programme based in a hospital in Accra which also includes community outreach work.

During your stay in Ghana you will live with local host-families. There is plenty to do in whichever region of Ghana you are located and, as one of our most popular destinations, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community to spend time with.
