Tanzania: Volunteer Human Rights Internships and Work Experience

Our Human Rights placement in Tanzania is based in the town of Arusha. As a volunteer you will be given the opportunity to work on a really worthwhile project alongside a respected humanitarian organisation whilst gaining first-hand experience of human rights in practice.
Projects Abroad works closely with an independent NGO who strive to make a difference in the lives of those who are most vulnerable. They work directly with the local communities assessing the needs and putting strategies in place in order to overcome difficulties in the areas of education, community health, counselling, legal aid and socio-economic empowerment.
Volunteering on a Human Rights Internship in Tanzania
Volunteers work alongside qualified and passionate individuals in and around the town of Arusha. Even though this NGO helps a wide variety of people their priority lies with women and children, specifically single mothers, orphans and youths. You will be given the opportunity to expand your horizons whilst also making a real impact to people’s quality of life.
The Human Rights project offers volunteers the unique opportunity to get involved at a grass roots level. Many communities in Tanzania still live in poverty. The organisation we work with focuses on creating programmes which help individuals in the battle against ignorance, diseases, poverty, HIV and AIDS and environmental degradation.
Human Rights Work Experience Opportunities with Projects Abroad
Volunteers are involved in some of the following areas:
- Promoting the importance of health through workshops and presentations in a target community.
- Education and creating awareness about HIV and AIDS.
- Educating communities on the harmful effects of female genital mutilation
- Aiming to reduce mortality rates of under-fives by educating target groups and communities about the importance of breast feeding, food security, and nutrition.
- Educating and creating awareness in communities about the rights of disabled children. Therefore ensuring that all children have equal rights and disabled children can be given the opportunity to develop into useful family and community members.
- Supporting orphaned children and teenagers who are at risk of sexual abuse, drug abuse and drug addition
- Educating communities on the issues of family planning and sexually transmitted diseases. Ensuring in the long run that children are born into and grow up with good healthy families where both parents share equal responsibility.
- Identifying cultural traditions, beliefs and taboos that are gender discriminative and then educating and carrying out campaigns in order to change these views.
These aims and objectives and their strategies are at the forefront of the work which is carried out on the Human Rights project. However, the project never stops developing and growing, so new issues arise on a regular basis and new strategies are constantly being put in place in order to overcome these issues and help those who are most in need.
As a volunteer you will be able to get involved in a variety of different areas depending on your level of experience and areas of interest. It is important that you are flexible, communicate well and are keen and willing to learn.
It is through the help of the volunteers and their local staff that this NGO can achieve many short and long term goals whilst helping the most vulnerable communities around them.
